Students participate in band, chess, choir, dance, debating, drama and green team.
Wakehurst is very proud of its band program. Membership is open to all students who have reached Year 3, with children progressing from the Training Band to the Concert Band. Our Bands strive to achieve high standards with performances throughout the year at special school events and assemblies, we regularly enter annual festivals and eisteddfods where we have enjoyed success.
The Chess Club operates one morning each week, with students involved in participating in lessons and chess games led by a representative from the Sydney Academy of Chess. Students build their knowledge and skills each week in a variety of learning situations. For further information on how to join this program, please see our school office.
Our choir comprises children from Years 4-6. There are many performance opportunities throughout the year at various events such as Open Days, Education Week performances,, assemblies and for special guests, with participation in the annual Arts North Choral Festival during Term 3 a highlight.
Each year, students audition for our Wakehurst dance program. A junior and senior dance group are selected and work towards a range of perforamce opportunities including the Sydney North Dance Festival, Education Week Open Day and our Kindergarten Showcase event.
Students in Stage 3 have the opportunity to try out for our Premier's Debating Challenge teams. This program allows students the opportunity to develop their debating and public speaking skills as they debate teams from other schools.
A voluntary student Green Team leads the school in helping with recycling, composting, waste reduction programs and care of the school's vegetable garden. All children learn about and are encouraged to consider the impact on our environment of energy consumption and waste management. Through recycling, Wakehurst Public School has managed to halve the amount of waste being sent to landfill, while the vegetable garden cared for by Green Team members is a focus for class lessons on healthy eating and sustainable practices. This group meets each Tuesday morning. Parents and carers are very welcome to come along and assist!
