Personal development, health and physical education

Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), students are expected to participate in PDHPE for between 1.5 and 2.5 hours per week in Kindergarten to Year 6.

PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.

At Wakehurst PS, sport is important, but not simply for sport's sake.  It's important for the life skills and personal development it brings.  We focus on K-6 skills development, including gymnastics.  Children are encouraged to achieve their personal best and are introduced to the ethos of supporting teammates as they have fun participating in a range of sporting activities.

Each child commencing at the Wakehurst is allocated to a sports house. The Wakehurst PS Houses and their colours are as shown. Unless otherwise requested, siblings are allocated to the same house.  The entire school participates in sport activities each week.

Sports carnivals make up an integral part of the school sporting program. There is an annual school swimming carnival held early in Term 1, an annual Cross Country Carnival held late in Term 1 and an annual athletics carnival held mid-year. From these three carnivals, competitors are selected to represent Wakehurst at zone level. Wakehurst is a member of Warringah Zone Primary Schools Sports Association (PSSA).

Primary Schools Sports Association (PSSA)

Students in Years 4-6 are eligible to try out for participation in oour school teams for the Warringah Zone Primary Schools Sports Association (PSSA) inter-school competitions. Teams are selected for cricket, softball and T-ball in summer and soccer, AFL and netball in winter.

To ensure that PSSA involvement remains enjoyable for all participants, students agree to abide by a players' code of conduct, which can be downloaded below:
